Indo Hap Ki Do is the Indian form of Hapkido designed by Dojunim Tarun Roy Choudhury. In the process of developing the art, he has made it suitable to the Indian climate and physical standards of the Indian people. At the same time, he has also maintained the International standards of training procedure.
Indo Hap Ki Do as envisioned by its founder master Tarun Roy Choudhury, is not only the synthesis of the founders martial training, but also the expression of his personal philosophy of honesty, loyalty and respect.
At it’s essence Indo Hap Ki Do is a self defense art. The uniqueness of this martial art lies in the fact that apart from self defense techniques it also stresses on areas such as harnessing “KI” or vital energy in the body. This helps an individual to harness their complete power and energy to complete any task at hand whether it is in the Dojang (training hall) or in any other area of life.

PRINCIPLES
On the “hard-soft” scale of martial arts, Indo hap Ki Do stands somewhere in the middle, employing both “soft” and “hard” techniques. Indo hap Ki Do is based on three principles:
1. Nonresistance (”Hwa”)
2. Circular Motion (“Won”)
3. The Water Principle (“Yu”)
Hwa or non-resistance, is simply the act of remaining relaxed and not directly opposing an opponent’s strength. For example, if an opponent tries to push against an Indo hap Ki Do student’s chest, rather than resisting and pushing back, the Indo hap Ki Do student would avoid a direct confrontation by moving in the direction of the opponent’s push and utilizing the opponent’s forward momentum to throw him.
Won, the circular motion principle is a way to gain momentum for executing the techniques in a natural and free-flowing manner. If an opponent attacks in linear motion, as in a punch or knife thrust, the Indo hap Ki Do student would redirect the opponent’s force by leading the attack in a circular pattern, thereby adding the attacker’s power to his own.
Yu, the water principle, can be thought of as the soft adaptable strength of water. Indo hap Ki Do is “soft” as it does not rely on physical force alone; much like water is soft to touch. It is “adaptable” as an Indo hap Ki Do master will attempt to deflect an opponent’s strike, in a way that is similar to free-flowing water being divided around a stone only to return and envelop it.
