Our Training Program
Indo Hap Ki Do - Way of Life
Indo Hap Ki Do training takes place in a Dojang (training hall). In Indo Hap Ki Do there are both physical and mental aspects of training. The physical training in Indo Hap Ki Do is diverse, covering general physical fitness and conditioning as well as specific self-defense techniques. Since a substantial portion of Indo Hap Ki Do consists of throws, one of the first things that the students learn is how to safely roll or fall. The specific techniques for attacks includes both strikes and grabs and the techniques for defense consists of throws and pins. After basic techniques are mastered, the students move into more advanced techniques.

Strength is not a pre-requisite for Indo Hap Ki Do – What strength and fitness is necessary to perform the techniques develops naturally as a result of training.
A typical session starts with warm up exercises, which loosens and prepares the body for training. This is followed by practicing the techniques including stances, strikes and defenses. Students also practice rolls and break falls. With a wide variety of equipment such as punching bags, gymnasium rings and other exercise equipment the student also gets an opportunity to condition themselves and build their strength, power and stamina.
Indo Hap Ki Do has a well defined training curriculum that aims to train the students right from White belt up to Black Belt. Each belt has specific techniques and criteria to be met before a student advances to a higher belt. Our training sessions are of typically around 2 hours and comprises of the following :
- Warm up – A senior Belt leads the class in terms of warm up exercises comprising of stretches and aerobic exercises. The intention of this sessions is for the body to get sufficiently warmed up for the exercises and class to follow.
- Basic Techniques Drilling : This involves the practicing of various Indo Hap Kid Do techniques inclusive of kicks, blocks, strikes and joint locks. This is done either in a class or pairing up with different partners.
- Special Indo Hap Ki Do techniques : This involves predominantly practicing the Front and Back rolls and various break fall techniques
- The session is concluded by either some exercises on building strength and stamina or by cool down exercises
Indo Hap Ki Do also puts equal importance on the mental aspects of techniques with students performing meditation as well as learning breathing techniques to calm their mind as well as to be in the present moment.
Progress in Indo Hap Ki Do is measured by a series of 10 belts from White to Black.
